In most situations, proper care of your teeth that have had Endodontic treatment will allow them to last as long as your natural teeth. However, in certain situations, a tooth that has been treated may not heal or the individual may continue to feel pain, or the pain may even re-appear months or years after treatment. In such instances, Endodontic retreatment may be necessary.
Any of the above symptoms will ultimately lead to the need to make an incision in the gum to gain access to clean the canal and carefully examine inside the problematic tooth. After the canal is properly cleaned, it will be filled and sealed by placing a filling or buildup restoration in your affected tooth. We use local anesthesia to numb any potential pain and discomfort.
Upon the completion of the retreatment of your tooth, we will provide a record of your retreatment to your dentist. We recommend that you make an appointment with him/her for a follow-up restoration a week or so after your retreatment. Your dentist will determine the type of restoration appropriate and necessary to protect your retreated tooth.
The recovery period for an Endodontic retreatment is similar to your initial root canal therapy. Generally, upon completion of the job, you will feel mild-to-moderate discomfort for only a few days.
